Visitor & Supervisor Test – health and safety assessment for UK construction sites.

What is the Visitor & Supervisor Test?

The ECS-style Visitor & Supervisor Test is aimed at people who regularly visit or oversee UK construction sites but are not carrying out hands-on trade work. It confirms that you understand the key health, safety and environmental rules before stepping onto a live site.

Clients, project managers, consultants, inspectors and senior staff are often required to hold a relevant safety test before they are allowed access to construction areas. This test helps you meet those requirements and demonstrate that you can move around site safely and follow UK construction standards.

Test Duration Normally 45–60 minutes
Assessment Format Computer-based, multiple-choice questions
Where You Can Take It Approved UK test centres (with selected online options)
Use of Result Evidence for ECS card and site access checks

Key Safety Topics Covered

The Visitor & Supervisor Test does not assess trade skills. Instead, it focuses on the core safety topics that anyone entering a construction site must understand, especially in a supervisory or client-facing role.

Recognising common site hazards and unsafe conditions
Using the correct PPE for visits and inspections
Following access routes, signage and site rules
Understanding the responsibilities of supervisors and visitors

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a tradesperson to sit the Visitor & Supervisor Test?

No. The Visitor & Supervisor Test is specifically designed for people who are not carrying out hands-on trade work. It is aimed at clients, supervisors, managers, inspectors and professional visitors who need to enter construction areas and understand the key health and safety rules.

How is this different from a standard health and safety test?

General health and safety tests often focus on construction workers and specific trades. The Visitor & Supervisor Test is more focused on awareness, safe movement around site and supervisory responsibilities. It is tailored to people who oversee or visit work rather than those physically carrying out the tasks.

How long is the test result valid for?

In most cases, health and safety test results are treated as valid for up to five years. However, individual employers, contractors or card schemes may set their own renewal rules. It is always worth checking your company or card provider’s latest policy on refresher tests.

Can I book the test if I am currently outside the UK?

Yes. You can arrange your booking from overseas, as long as you are able to attend a UK test centre (or any approved international centre, where available) on your chosen date. Many people working for UK clients or projects arrange their test ahead of travelling.

What happens if I do not pass the test first time?

If you are not successful on your first attempt, you can normally rebook another test date. We recommend reviewing the official health and safety revision materials and focusing on the topics highlighted in your feedback before retaking the assessment.
