Essential Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Test for UK construction and building services workers – required for ECS cards and safe site access.
Health, Safety & Environment Test – core requirement for working safely on UK construction sites.
The Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Assessment checks that you understand the basic rules needed to work safely on UK construction and engineering sites. It focuses on real site situations – from working at height and using PPE to dealing with hazards, near misses and environmental risks.
Passing the Health, Safety & Environment Test is normally required when applying for or renewing ECS cards and other UK site access cards. It gives employers confidence that you know your responsibilities and can help maintain a safe, compliant working environment.
The fee includes your Health, Safety & Environment Test booking, assessment and official result confirmation.
Appointments are usually available within 1–2 weeks, subject to UK test centre availability.
Shows employers and main contractors that you understand core health, safety and environmental expectations on UK sites.
Used as evidence when applying for or renewing ECS and other UK site cards linked to construction and engineering work.
Helps you spot hazards earlier, follow safe systems of work and protect yourself and others around you.
Gives you a stronger foundation for further training, apprenticeships and higher-level qualifications in the UK industry.
The Health, Safety & Environment Assessment uses multiple-choice questions based on real construction scenarios. You may be asked what to do if you see unsafe behaviour, how to report a near miss, which PPE is required for certain tasks, how to work safely at height and what your legal responsibilities are as an employee on a UK site.
In most cases, the Health, Safety & Environment Test result is accepted for up to 5 years for card applications. Some employers or schemes may ask you to update it sooner if you change role, move to a higher-risk environment or there are major regulation changes. Always check the specific card or scheme you are applying for.
Many candidates can sit the Health, Safety & Environment Test either at a UK test centre or online where remote testing is supported. For online assessments, you will normally need a computer, webcam, reliable internet connection and a quiet room for the duration of the test. Centre-based tests are supervised in person at an approved location.
If you don’t pass first time, you can re-book and take the assessment again after a short waiting period. It’s a good idea to review the official revision materials, refresh your understanding of site rules and speak to your employer or training provider about any topics you found difficult. Many people pass comfortably on their second attempt once they have revised the weaker areas.
