FESS stands for Fire, Emergency and Security Systems. The sector includes the installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and alarm systems, emergency lighting, CCTV, access control, intruder alarms and related safety systems that protect people and property in UK buildings.
The test is designed at apprentice level, so it focuses on basic principles rather than advanced engineering. If you read the preparatory material, understand simple safety rules and pay attention to the questions, most new starters find it manageable.
A general electrical apprentice test focuses on electrical installation work in general. The ECS FESS Apprentice Test focuses specifically on systems that protect buildings and people – fire alarms, emergency lighting and security systems – and the responsibilities that come with working in this specialist area.
Once you have passed, your result can be used as part of your ECS FESS Apprentice card application. From there, you continue your apprenticeship, build on-the-job experience and over time work towards higher FESS levels such as Operative, Technician or Engineer.
