Many provisional ECS applications are processed in around 10–15 working days after the official body receives a complete and correct application. Processing times and decisions are controlled by ECS and may vary depending on their workload and current rules.

The £79 fee is for Apply ECS Card support only. Any official ECS card fees, HS&E tests and training costs are separate and paid directly to the relevant organisations.

Training While You Hold a Provisional Card

Many people holding a provisional installation electrician card are also attending college, completing an apprenticeship or working towards an NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification. Approved UK training providers offer electrical installation courses and ECS Health & Safety assessments that you can complete while gaining supervised site experience.

How Our Support Process Works

  1. We check that your current training and qualifications broadly match what is usually expected for provisional level.
  2. We help you understand how to book or prove an ECS Health, Safety & Environmental Assessment if required.
  3. You complete the Apply ECS Card online form and upload your certificates, ID and supporting documents.
  4. We review your information for obvious gaps or issues and highlight anything that may need clarification.
  5. We assist you (or your employer) in following the latest ECS instructions to submit your application.
  6. ECS review your application and, if approved, issue and post your Provisional Installation Electrician Card to your UK address.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the provisional card application usually take?

Once a complete application and documents have been received by the official scheme, many provisional card applications are processed in around 10–15 working days. However, times can change depending on ECS workload, and incomplete applications may take longer.

What is the ECS Health, Safety & Environmental Assessment?

It is a multiple-choice test that checks you understand key health, safety and environmental rules on UK construction sites. A valid pass or accepted equivalent is normally required before most ECS cards, including provisional cards, are issued.

How long is the Provisional Installation Electrician Card valid for?

Provisional cards are generally time-limited and intended to be used while you complete further training and experience. The exact validity and any limits will be set by ECS and printed on your card, so always check the expiry date and current scheme rules.

What level of supervision do I need with this card?

While holding a provisional card you are expected to work under appropriate supervision from a more experienced, fully qualified electrician. The level of supervision may vary depending on your experience and the type of tasks you are carrying out, but you should always follow your employer’s and ECS safety guidance.
